Cats,
the longest running show in Broadway history, will close its doors. Hundreds
of cats will be hitting the unemployment lines, and The Winter Garden,
once a bustling tourist attraction, will be vacated.
Hmmmn, what to do with such a vast, empty space? Surely, we can't let
The Winter Garden fall into the hands of drug lords or even worse, Disney
retailers. Well, I've got some good news, and I would be extremely grateful
if you would help me spread it.
On September 9th, Downtown art star, Reverend Jen, will be performing
a very special "sneak preview" of Rats, her latest, one-woman, tour-de-force
musical event, which may just be powerful enough to fill the shoes of
its feline predecessor. With musical numbers like, "We don't have thumbs",
"Someone put an ear on my back", and "Put the glue traps away", Rats addresses
the age old war between man and rat, and in the end, it forces us to look
inward, and wonder just who the rat really is.
Don't miss the potent interpretive dance, in which Reverend Jen pretends
to be stuck to a glue trap, or the street-smart gangsta rap number "Bad
Ass Rat Rap."
With lyrics like, "Yo! Bitch! Get me piece of cheese and dim the lights!"
it serves up a gritty, urban sensibility that Cats was never quite able
to capture.
This is the first show, in what will hopefully be, many productions of
Rats. However, Reverend Jen has not yet announced the next scheduled show,
so try not to miss this one, because, you never know. It's free today,
but tomorrow, you could be coughing up 50 bucks to see it on Broadway.
What we're saying is: DON'T WALK. RUN.
